Young farmers key to innovating agri sector, EPP Group MEPs say.

Stand-up CB on Here´s a statistic is worth a thousand words. Did you know that for every nine European farmers over the age of 55, there's only one under 35? How to stop the rural exodus and get young people interested in farming again? An awards competition is one way to do it.
CB off At the second European Congress of young farmers in the European Parliament, EPP Group MEPs honoured youthful energy and innovation in agriculture.
Nuno Melo, Portuguese MEP on This is a great opportunity for, let´s say about 400 young farmers from 22 European countries. And it is an opportunity because, in this congress they can share experiences, and they can show their projects, which is for us a signal that we the politicians and the EPP Group want to give.
CB off The farming work force has aged more than in any other sector. Since 2000, the number of farmers fell 9% overall, and 45% among young farmers. Thus the urgency to attract youth.
Elisabeth Köstinger, Austrian MEP on These are some kinds of role models, can it be, how young farmers can develop their farms and find special markets and special ways to build up a very fruitful future.
CB off The gathering hands out three awards, the top prize worth 10,000 euros, to farmers who are innovative, develop sustainable agriculture and pioneer new marketing techniques.
CB off The top award this year went to Dutch farmer Eric Pelleboer, whose project has successfully connected farmers with consumers to exchange information and promote better farming.
Eric Pelleboer, Best Project winner I feel great, and it´s a pleasure to win the challenge, and yeah, that´s very good.
Mariya Gabriel, Bulgarian MEP on The message of today, it´s a message of hope.
For us as the European Parliament, as one of the main defenders of young people in context of the Common Agricultural Policy,
It´s important to continue defending young people.
CB off How to modernize traditional farming? How to innovate working or organizational methods? How to make farming economically and/or socially viable? And how to improve packaging, distribution and export? The congress examined how those aspects can boost the sector, by motivating, and helping, young farmers.
Maria Auxiliadora Correa, Spanish MEP on The members of the European Parliament, we are aware, we know that the agricultural sector, the food-processing sector, is an engine of growth and an engine of development for many European regions. And we are aware that young farmers are especially a key to making development possible.
CB on Organizers here note the event isn't aimed at marginalizing older farmers. On the contrary – it's to point out that farmers of all ages face the same issues of getting a minimum profit at fair prices. Innovation can be one key to achieving that.
