EPP Group Toughen Stance on Syria and Demand Sanctions Against al Assad Regime

The European Parliament, during its plenary session this week in Strasbourg, showed its support for a proposal to send a joint UN-Arab League peace force to Syria to end violence in the country. In the hemicycle Ioannis Kasoulides, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group, and Ignacio Salafranca, EPP Group Coordinator in the Foreign Affairs Committee, insisted that there should be no further tolerance of the shedding of blood in Syria. The continued blocking by China and Russia, permanent members of the UN Security Council, of proposals for a resolution condemning repression by the Bachar al Assad government and aiming to end violence in the country under pain of being sanctioned by the international community was highlighted during the debate. Available material includes soundbites with the full speech of Kasoulides in English and Salafranca in Spanish in the shotlist information.
